Secrets of the NRMP Code

Ok so thats as clickbaity a title I’ve every made, but it really seems to decribe a page I ran across today on the NRMP website.

https://www.nrmp.org/program-codes-and-types/

The NRMP program code breaks down into four blocks.

Block 1 – Institution Code
Four characters representing the institution sponsoring the residency program.

Block 2 – Specialty Code
Three characters for the specialty code. For ENT this is always XXX.

Block 3 – Program Type
All ENT residency spots are 5 year programs starting with PGY-1, so they are all categorical programs (type C). Many years ago you matched into an advanced program (type A) for PGY-2 to PGY-5 but had to also match into a prelim year of surgery (type P).

Block 4 – Track Number
Track number zero (0) is the default or main track at an institution. Other tracks may be possible typically 6 or 7 year research tracks.

So that was my little diversion into the NRMP for today. Let me know in the comments if this was interesting…or not.

Residents, Attendings and the COVID Crisis

To Be a Partner in Life: Physician/Surgeon Training During the COVID-19 Pandemic by Joshua Horton

I’ve been pointing my colleagues to this article as a call for us (attendings) to be examples of courage, competence and caring during this epidemic.  We need to lead and teach by example first.
By the time this is all over I believe that every healthcare provider will have got covid19.  Us old guys (45 yo) need residents to see us do one, so you can do and teach while we are down for a couple weeks.  And we can let the 60 years old ride the bench until things settle down and there is less of a resource crunch.

The original article on Medium has been taken down pending publication in an Otolaryngology journal.

This is a google cache link so people can read it until it is published

Still not totally clear on why ENT has so many more applicants in ERAS than people that submit rank lists via NRMP.
